How to be your best in the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic: Part 2
The best thing you can do is be safe, but the second best thing is to be productive. ~ Chris Guillebeau
Last week’s newsletter looked at some practical ways to take care of your health and wellbeing so that you survive the coronavirus pandemic. In summary, exercising from home and focusing on a daily routine can help you manage your emotional state during this difficult time.
But what about your finances and your career? Is there a way we can end the pandemic and restart the economy, saving both livelihoods and lives?
It’s clear that the economic impact of COVID-19 is huge and potentially disastrous, especially for those in the hospitality industry. So, if you don’t know how to prepare for a recession or what to do if you’ve lost your job, now’s a great time to start building an emergency fund. If that seems overwhelming, start small with (for example) some simple ways to stretch your food budget. You can even do a ‘pantry project’ to save money and prevent unnecessary trips to the store.
Indeed, although you might just want to curl up on the couch and binge whatever’s trending on TV, now’s the perfect time for upskilling your career. And even if your job is secure, there are still much better things to do with your time, from online art lessons and global hackathons to cooking classes and insightful books. I’m sure that if you spend time thinking about it (and we’ve all got plenty of time these days!) you’ll come up with lots more useful things to do when you're stuck at home.
Seth Godin says it well:
What if we set aside urgencies and focused simply on what’s important instead? What if we did the work that matters?
